VA's voluntary certification law says that no home inspector may call him/herself a "certified home inspector" without meeting the state requirements.
State Requirements for Home Inspectors in Virginia:
All applicants for an individual Home Inspector Certificate must meet the following requirements:
Distance learning courses, including online courses, where course content includes the areas tested on the National Home Inspectors Examination are accepted to meet entry requirements!

State Requirements for Home Inspectors in Virginia:
All applicants for an individual Home Inspector Certificate must meet the following requirements:
Age of 18 years old.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Completed one of the following:
- Completed 70 contact hours of education and have completed a minimum of 50 home inspections or
- Completed 70 contact hours of education and have completed a minimum of 25 certified home inspections under the direct supervision of a certified home inspector. - Passed the National Home Inspectors Examination or another written competency examination approved by the Board.
- Submit evidence of having obtained at least $250,000 in general liability insurance.
